Meet city’s top dads

YESTERDAY was Father’s day, when dads all across the city were treated like the stars they are. To celebrate that day, in conjunction with Queensgate, we have been running our annual Dad of the Year competition. Here we announce the winner and runnners up

WHAT really impressed the judges about this year’s winner is his son’s obvi- ous affection for him not only as a dad but also as a member of the community.

Tony Judge (60) from Walton, was nominated by his son Steve (23). Steve said: “I’m nominating my dad because he fits the description of not just a brilliant dad, but a brilliant person in general. “He’s the sort of person that you can always turn to, and is the first person to offer assistance with anything.

“My old man has befriended a lot of people in Peterborough and Stamford, and is well known among the older generation (seeing as he’s now becoming one of them) and is often helping them by taking them to the shops, to see their relatives or other friends without transport.” Steve said that Tony, who has just retired as a plumber, would “do anything” for his three children. As well as Steve, Tony is father to Paul (39) and Melanie (33) and has five grandchildren, aged five to 14.

What also touched the judges was the support Tony gave to his family when his wife of 40 years died last year.

Despite being in mourning himself, Steve described Tony as “a rock for the family” during that difficult time.

Yet Tony remains modest about the role he played in looking after his family after the sad bereavement.

He said: “Family has always been important to me, so when that happened we were all there for each other really.”

Tony said he was “touched and very honoured” to find out he had been nominated for this award.

Summing up his dad, Steve explained why he deserved to be Dad of the Year and take home our fantastic prizes.

“He’s a tough man, who has had a hard life, and deserves a great big thank you,” he said.

A BIG THANK YOU: Steve Judge with his father Tony, who he nominated in the dad of the year competition. (METP-17-06
