New kit for primary pupils thanks to grant
WORLD Cup fever has nothing on the excitement generated when Longthorpe Primary School players saw their new football strip.
After years of wearing tired old shirts and shorts, the children have now pulled on their new kit with as much pride as England captain Stephen Gerrard does for his country.
The youngsters had been given £400 by the Football Foundation to buy the kit, which sees them swap their black and white stripes for a red ensemble.
It was not just the first team smiling, as the generous donation also meant a second team kit and goalkeeping jerseys were bought.
Now, the team are set to take on local rivals St Botolph’s and are hoping their new kit will bring to an end their losing streak.
PE co-ordinator at the school, in Bradwell Road, Claire Miller said the children had been “incredibly excited” when they heard the strip had arrived and could not wait to show off all their skills in it.
Mrs Miller said: “They couldn’t wait to try it on for size and were thrilled when they actually saw it.
“Having the new kit makes them feel more of a team as well and we are hoping it will rub off on the pitch as well.”
