Spate of number plate thefts
POLICE are offering a £150 reward for information after a spate of thefts of number plates from cars.
Six number plates have been targeted in Stamford recently and police have warned crooks they are on their case.
Normally, when plates are stolen they are used on cars involved in crimes at a later date, but these plates do not appear to be being used for criminal activity and officers believe they may be being collected – possibly by youngsters.
Inspector Gary Stewart said: “Six cars have been targeted recently and we did have a similar spike last year.
“We want to get on top of the problem before it develops. There doesn’t seem to be any common thread in terms of the types of cars they are being taken from, or the particular years of plate being stolen.
“But the fact they are not being used for crime does suggest they are being collected.”
He said police wanted to remind youngsters and parents that this is a criminal offence and they will be looking to prosecute.
He added “A criminal conviction can ruin your future in terms of education and employment prospects and we are urging whoever is doing this to stop.
“This is causing a lot of inconvenience and cost to local motorists and we are offering this reward to encourage people to come forward and help us with our inquiries.”
