Driver still on the run

A CAR thief is still on the run af­ter crash­ing through a level cross­ing bar­rier in front of a train in a po­lice chase.

A red Mercedes Kom­pres­sor coupe was stolen from Grounds Av­enue, March be­tween 11.30pm on Satur­day and 9am on Sun­day.

A man was seen driv­ing the car when it was picked up by an Au­to­matic Num­ber Plate Recog­ni­tion cam­era in St John’s Road, Peter­bor­ough head­ing to­wards Bishop’s Road at 2.30pm.

The driver was pur­sued by po­lice of­fi­cers, along the A605 to the Kings Delph rail­way cross­ing, where he crashed through bar­ri­ers warn­ing of an ap­proach­ing train.

Al­though a train col­lided with the bar­rier no­body was in­jured.

The Mercedes was later found aban­doned in Wool­pack Lane, Whit­tle­sey, at 3.45pm. Any­one with in­for­ma­tion should con­tact po­lice on 0345 456 4564.
