A ‘danger to children’ jailed
A CITY man has been jailed for seven years and branded a “danger to children” after committing sexual offences against a brother and sister.
George Cardno (28), of no fixed address, was found guilty of a string of offences against the youngsters at Peterborough Crown Court on May 26.
He was jailed yesterday at Peterborough Crown Court and was told by the judge that he would be placed on the sex offenders register for life.
The court heard that the boy, now 17, was aged just 11 when Cardno committed offences against him between February and November 2004.
In relation to this victim, Cardno was found guilty of attempted rape of a boy aged under 13, sexual assault and causing or inciting and boy under 13 to engage in sexual activity.
The court was told the offences against the girl took place between late 2004, when she was aged seven, and early 2007. She is now aged 13.
In relation to the girl, Cardno was found guilty of sexual assault and causing or inciting a girl under 13 to engage in sexual activity.
The court heard the victims came to know Cardno through a relative and all the offences happened in Peterborough.
Although they took place several years ago, Cardno was only arrested by police in September last year, after the boy told his mother what had been happening.
Yesterday, Cardno was sentenced to seven years in prison on the attempted rape charge. He was given five years in jail, to run concurrently, for the sexual assault of the 13-year-old girl.
Shorter sentences for the other offences were also given and they will run concurrently with the rape sentence.
As well as receiving the jail terms, Cardno was told he was not allowed to have unsupervised contact with children aged under 16 for the rest of his life.
Detective Constable Dave Connelly, of Cambridgeshire police, investigated the case.
He said the offences had a devastating impact on Cardno’s young victims and their relatives.
He added: “These offences left the victims and their family shocked and traumatised but Cardno refused to admit what he had done.”
DC Connelly added that he was pleased with the sentence and branded Cardno a danger to youngsters.
He said: “Cardno is a danger to children and that is reflected in the sentence handed down today.”
