Youngsters set to run for fun
RUNNERS can test their athletic prowess and have fun as an annual race returns to Hampton Vale this weekend.
More than 100 runners of all ages are expected to lace up their trainers for the seventh annual Hampton Fun Run on Saturday.
The scenic 2.1km race takes place around St James’ Pond, which is adjacent to Hampton Vale Primary School.
There will also be a shorter race for children aged under eight, which will take place following the fun run on Hampton Vale Primary School playing field.
The race is organised by the Yaxley Runners running club, which meets every Monday evening at the Hampton Hargate Sports Facility, in Beaumont Way.
All profits from the event will go to the Ben Hunt Memorial Garden at Hampton Vale Primary School. The garden was created in memory of former pupil Ben, who was tragically killed in a road accident while on holiday in Florida.
Club spokesman Duncan Jackson said: “The Hampton Fun Run is always one of the highlights of our calendar at the club and it is great to see so many youngsters taking part and enjoying running.
“We even had a couple of toddlers taking part in the under-eights race, so it really is an event for people of all ages.
“With so much focus on children’s fitness these days, it’s fantastic to see so many fit youngsters enjoying some exercise and having a fun time, while raising money for a great cause.”
The race begins at noon, with the under eights event starting at 12.45pm. Postal entries have now closed, although runners will be able to enter on the day at Hampton Vale Primary School.
Entry costs £3, with each finisher receiving a memento.
There will also be several prizes on offer, including the Jed Holmes Memorial Trophy, for the first Hampton Hargate Primary School pupil, with the trophy named after the school’s former headteacher, and the Ben Hunt Memorial Trophy for the first Hampton Vale pupil.
