Hazel now sets her sights on the Commonwealths
FORMER Evening Telegraph Sportswoman of the Year Louise Hazel will now target the Commonwealth Games in Delhi after dropping out of the Erdgas Combined Events Meeting in Ratingen, Germany on Saturday.
The March heptathlete travelled to Germany hoping to attain the 6,100 points she needed to qualify for the European Championships in Barcelona but after dropping out after two events she is now looking to compete for England in India rather than for Britain in Spain.
She said: “I had a hip problem, which I felt after the hurdles (where she finished second in 13.70) and I was well down after the high jump (where she managed 1.59m).
“I knew I’d need to make up a lot of points so I decided to drop out, accept it, and look ahead to the Commonwealths instead.
“I’ve got time to get my body sorted, work on my high jump, and then go to the Commonwealths. I’ve already got the qualifying standard of 5,500 for that.”
Hazel’s injury isn’t too serious and she is likely to compete in Birmingham this weekend at the AAA Championships.
CHANGE OF PLAN: Louise Hazel.
