But in all se­ri­ous­ness we should have beaten Slove­nia by far more than one goal and we are still nowhere near the fin­ished ar­ti­cle.

We did play at a much bet­ter tempo and al­though it wasn’t the flow­ing foot­ball we are ca­pa­ble of pro­duc­ing, it was a hell of a big im­prove­ment.

Jer­main De­foe’s first touch proved to be the most im­por­tant one but Wayne Rooney, Steven Ger­rard and Frank Lam­pard all should have scored as well.

The fans were mag­nif­i­cent again and this re­sult will give ev­ery­one a lift. But I am re­ally concerned about Rooney.

He is a world-class player at the World Cup but he’s play­ing like Don­ald Duck. We’ve got to get him right.

Okay, it was ten times bet­ter than Amer­ica and a thou­sand times more en­joy­able than Al­ge­ria but there’s no real signs yet that we can be world­beat­ers.

But at least we showed some de­sire, some pas­sion, and, in patches, a fair bit of skill but let’s not for­get that Slove­nia aren’t even ranked in the world’s top 20, let alone the top five!
