MR Mathers’ partner, 18year-old daughter, two step sons and work colleagues were in court to hear Judge Hammond pass sentence on him.
Jailing Joyce, the judge said: “After the collision he escaped like a coward, leaving a man dead.
“It’s the worst case of aggravated vehicle taking I’ve ever come across, or ever heard of.
“No sentence I pass can fairly reflect the loss of the life of an innocent, decent, devoted family man.”
In a letter to the court, Joyce’s girlfriend, who also lives in Orton Goldhay, Peterborough, said that he deeply regretted what he had done and the heartache caused to the deceased’s man’s family.
