Desert test for young sci­en­tists

BUD­DING sci­en­tists have been heat­ing wa­ter us­ing light bulbs and pu­ri­fy­ing wa­ter as part of a desert chal­lenge.

Pupils from Al­der­man Ja­cobs Pri­mary School, The Park Lane School and Coates Pri­mary School were in­vited to Sir Harry Smith Com­mu­nity Col­lege in Whit­tle­sey for a sci­en­tific desert chal­lenge.

Us­ing their knowl­edge, the pupils had to learn how to sur­vive on a desert is­land, heat­ing wa­ter us­ing a light bulb and pu­ri­fy­ing it us­ing sand and salt.

As­sis­tant head teacher James Fuller said: “Ev­ery year we tie a sci­ence project in with a theme and this year we chose the desert. Staff dressed up as pi­rates and sixth for­m­ers as mon­keys.

“We even pro­vided the pupils with trop­i­cal re­fresh­ments to keep the theme go­ing.”

The win­ners of the desert chal­lenge were pupils from Al­der­man Ja­cobs School in Whit­tle­sey.
