New bid­ders for waste con­tracts

PETER­BOR­OUGH City Coun­cil has in­vited two new bid­ders to join ne­go­ti­a­tions for the de­sign, build­ing and op­er­a­tion of new re­cy­cling fa­cil­i­ties.

Biffa now joins Kier and Viri­dor in vy­ing for the con­tract for the new en­er­gyfrom-waste and ma­te­ri­als re­cy­cling site, set to be op­er­at­ing in 2014/15.

Com­mu­nity Waste now joins Green­star and Viri­dor in com­pet­ing for the con­tract for a ma­te­ri­als re­cy­cling fa­cil­ity, which is due to be run­ning by 2012/13.

Both the sites are due to op­er­ate on coun­cil owned land in Fen­gate, Peter­bor­ough.

The new bid­ders have joined the race af­ter Shanks, orig­i­nally short­listed for both projects, with­drew due to oth- er com­mit­ments.

The coun­cil now has to iden­tify the pre­ferred bid­ders for each project.

Plan­ning per­mis­sion al­ready ex­ists for the new ma­te­ri­als re­cy­cling and the en­ergy-from-waste fa­cil­i­ties.

The new fa­cil­i­ties will sup­port the city coun­cil’s plans for an in­te­grated waste man­age­ment sys­tem and to re­cy­cle and com­post more than 65 per cent of house­hold and gar­den waste, di­vert­ing waste from land­fill sites.

Sep­a­rately, the city coun­cil has in­vited Amey, En­ter­prise, HW Martin and Ve­o­lia to sub­mit de­tailed pro­pos­als to be­come its part­ner on waste and re­cy­cling col­lec­tions, street clean­ing and grounds main­te­nance. The part­ner­ship is set to start in 2011.
