New bidders for waste contracts
PETERBOROUGH City Council has invited two new bidders to join negotiations for the design, building and operation of new recycling facilities.
Biffa now joins Kier and Viridor in vying for the contract for the new energyfrom-waste and materials recycling site, set to be operating in 2014/15.
Community Waste now joins Greenstar and Viridor in competing for the contract for a materials recycling facility, which is due to be running by 2012/13.
Both the sites are due to operate on council owned land in Fengate, Peterborough.
The new bidders have joined the race after Shanks, originally shortlisted for both projects, withdrew due to oth- er commitments.
The council now has to identify the preferred bidders for each project.
Planning permission already exists for the new materials recycling and the energy-from-waste facilities.
The new facilities will support the city council’s plans for an integrated waste management system and to recycle and compost more than 65 per cent of household and garden waste, diverting waste from landfill sites.
Separately, the city council has invited Amey, Enterprise, HW Martin and Veolia to submit detailed proposals to become its partner on waste and recycling collections, street cleaning and grounds maintenance. The partnership is set to start in 2011.
