MULAN: ULTIMATE EDITION (Cine Asia, cert 15, two-disc set, £17.99)

YOU’LL remember the animated Disney classic from 1998, but this is an extravagant, action-packed spectacle based on an inspirational Chinese legend featuring top Asian actors like Vicki Zhao from the hit Red Cliff and Jackie Chan’s son Jaycee. It’s a story of heroism and undying love set against the backdrop of a bloody war. When the emperor decrees that all families in the Northern Province must defend their homeland against the barbarian hordes, Mulan disguises herself as a male soldier to save her aging father from the horrors of the battlefield. Mulan’s courage and resourcefulness sees her elevated to general, but her only weakness is her affection for one of her comrades and this could prove deadly for both. Moving and beautiful.
