Draw sends the Swiss packing

The Peterborough Evening Telegraph - - Classifieds -

SWITZERLAND ...................... 0 HONDURAS ........................... 0 HAVING beaten Spain in their opening, Switzerland failed to score in their two remaining games and crashed out.

Failure to beat a Honduras side who had lost both of their previous games without scoring proved costly and the Swiss are out of the World Cup.

Honduras had the ball in the net in the closing stages but substitute Georgie Welcome saw his effort ruled out for offside, the assistant referee’s flag proving far from welcome for a country seeking their first ever victory at a World Cup finals.

Even the introduction of Switzerland’s record goalscorer Alexander Frei, who has 40 goals in 73 matches for his country, couldn’t provide the breakthrough.
