‘It’s almost like a natural high’

Neil Utteridge (3 ) is a roofer from Peterborough. He joined in January last year, having taken a break for a few years.

He said: “ I have always been to the gym, but had a few years away. Now I am back it has helped with my energy and fitness levels no end.

“It also helps at work, as my job is quite physical.

“From a social aspect, I have met likeminded people who are now good friends. I also enjoy the feeling that you get after a good training session, which is almost like a natural high.

“Visually seeing a change in your personal body composition is a good motivator. Seeing yourself getting trimmer and leaner makes it easier to keep going to continue improving.

“Getting compliments on the effort I put into training is also a good motivator.”

With a focus on stamina and energy, Neil has a range of goals that he has to meet. These are altered on a regular basis to ensure that he is getting the most out of every session, and is constantly improving.

He said: “Our resistance training programmes keep pushing us harder each time, whilst giving us new ideas for how we train. The review sessions are good to ensure that we are always progressing.”

Neil added that there is no excuse not to give it a go: “You can always make time, as gyms open from early until late. I would suggest that you just go down there and try it.

“The first few weeks are the hardest, but once you are into a routine and you start to see the benefits, it really helps to push you along.”
