HOW THEY RATED: Mark Plummer’s England ratings

The Peterborough Evening Telegraph - - World Cup -

DAVID JAMES...............................................6 One of few to emerge with any credit at all. Even he should have done better with the third goal. GLEN JOHNSON...........................................3 I hereby issue an apology to all readers for suggesting last week that he was sorting out his defensive frailties. He had an absolute stinker. ASHLEY COLE ...............................................3 Widely regarded as one of the best players in his position in world football. Not on this evidence though as he was mullered by Muller. JOHN TERRY.................................................3 Can never previously have produced a performance as poor as this. Accountable for first two German goals and generally all over the place. MATTHEW UPSON .......................................3 Was a complete shambles from start to finish. Only thing he did right was head our goal, but that was nowhere near enough to cancel out the chaos at the other end. JAMES MILNER ............................................5 The star turn against Slovenia never got into the game. Spotted delivering one good cross and then being substituted. GARETH BARRY............................................4 Oh dear, oh dear. Failed miserably in his midfield screening role as the classy Ozil and Schweinsteiger controlled the game. Gave defence no protection whatsoever. FRANK LAMPARD.........................................6 Just about the best of a bad bunch. Provided an attacking threat, scored a perfectly good ‘goal’ and thumped the bar with a free-kick. STEVEN GERRARD.......................................5 Looked more dangerous from the left than in recent games, but guilty of squandering far too many good positions with glory balls and ridiculous shooting attempts. A threat when a team plays well – a passenger when it doesn’t. Completely anonymous apart from heading against the bar from an offside position. Substitutes JOE COLE (for Milner) EMILE HESKEY (for Defoe) SHAUN WRIGHT-PHILLIPS (for Johnson)
