Johnson impressed with squad’s first day of pre-season
POSH boss Gary Johnson was impressed with the fitness, form and attitude of his first-team squad as they returned to the club for pre-season training yesterday.
The players endured a session in the gym in the morning before running in the afternoon sun at their Woodlands training base in Castor.
Johnson (left) said: “I asked the players to come back fit and they certainly did that. We had a full complement of players and they all looked very sharp.”
After training Johnson held meetings with all the players who don’t feature in his first-team plans next season.
There were 35 players at Woodlands, but Johnson wants to work with a maximum of 22.
The players who finished last season in the treatment room took part in training yesterday including defender Gaby Zakuani, winger Chris Whelpdale and striker Aaron Mclean.
Johnson expects the young winger joining Posh on loan from a Premier League side to sign before the end of this week.
He also hopes to complete the transfer of another new player before the squad head off for a train- ing camp in Portugal on July 8.
Posh have arranged a friendly at Portuguese top flight side Olhanense on Saturday, July 10.
