Shame on our overpaid team

The Peterborough Evening Telegraph - - Your Telegraph -

I AM 70 years old, and I saw England win the 1966 World Cup. A day to be proud and English, indeed.

Like all of us, I have seen many abject performances by more recent teams, but surely no England team has played as poorly, as badly, as stupidly as the overpaid, overpraised, slack-hearted team which faced Germany on Sunday.

They were shameful, and I say shame upon them who brought shame on England. Unfortunately, each of them will return to their various clubs to be feted and idolised by their fans.

I heard a football pundit say Rooney, Terry, Lampard etc were tired after a long season.

Well, for the enormous salaries given to them, I am sure a hard-working miner, or nurse, or policeman would love to swap salaries with most footballers.

As we won the cup 44 years ago, I will be 114 when we win it again! DAVID REID Norburn,
