PARAGUAY ............................. 0 JA­PAN .................................... 0 (af­ter ex­tra-time, Paraguay won 5-3 on penal­ties) PARAGUAY are through to the quar­ter-fi­nals of the World Cup for the first time in their his­tory af­ter win­ning a penalty shoot-out fol­low­ing a goal­less draw.

Coach Ger­ardo Martino’s men scored all five of their penal­ties but Ja­pan’s Yuichi Ko­mano saw his spot-kick brush the bar and fly to end their World Cup.

Ja­pan were also bid­ding to reach the quar­ter-fi­nals for the first time and came clos­est to scor­ing dur­ing a game of few chances when Daisuke Mat­sui smashed a lon­grange strike against the bar in the first half.

Thei re­sult ended Asia’s par­tic­i­pa­tion in the tour­na­ment, but en­sured there will be four South Amer­i­can sides in the last eight.
