Villa scores to send Por­tu­gal out

SPAIN ..................................... 1 POR­TU­GAL ............................. 0 DAVID Villa be­came the first player to score against Por­tu­gal dur­ing the World Cup fi­nals, the Barcelona ace set­ting up Spain’s quar­ter-fi­nal clash with Paraguay.

Por­tu­gal had de­fended su­perbly dur­ing the group stages but Villa fi­nally found a way past them just af­ter the hour-mark, An­dres Ini­etsa and Xavi com­bin­ing to set-up their new club­mate.

Por­tu­gal keeper Ed­uardo saved his first ef­fort but the for­mer Val­n­cia striker’s sec­ond ef­fort hit the un­der­side of the bar be­fore go­ing in.

Por­tu­gal were re­duced to 10 men a minute from time when Ri­cardo Costa was harshly sent off af­ter Joan Capdev­ila went down.

Costa didn’t ap­pear to have touched the Spa­niard who went down hold­ing his head.
