Carly makes a fine start in Black­pool

POOL: Evening Tele­graph Sportswoman of the Year Carly Smith has made a solid start to her World Cham­pi­onship cam­paign in Black­pool, beat­ing Ire­land’s Cathy Hunt 6-2 in the open­ing round of the sin­gles and win­ning 15 out of her 21 frames so far in the team event.

The Hampton pot­ter set up a clash with Wales’ Sharon Dick­son in the sec­ond round to­mor­row and also re­cov­ered from a slow start in the team com­pe­ti­tion to help Eng­land to six suc­ces­sive wins.

She won only one of her three frames in the sur­prise 8-7 de­feat by Wales, took two out of three in wins against Aus­tralia 10-5 and North­ern Ire­land 9-6 but won all three against both (11-4) and Scot­land (12-3).

Eng­land gained re­venge for their open­ing match de­feat by beat­ing Wales 9-6 and fol­lowed up with a 10-5 vic­tory over Aus­tralia, Smith win­ning two out of three on both oc­ca­sions.

Fel­low city pot­ter Liz Dis­ney, mak­ing her World Cham­pi­onship de­but, went out 6-2 in the open­ing round to Ire­land’s San­dra Bryan.
