Carly makes a fine start in Blackpool
POOL: Evening Telegraph Sportswoman of the Year Carly Smith has made a solid start to her World Championship campaign in Blackpool, beating Ireland’s Cathy Hunt 6-2 in the opening round of the singles and winning 15 out of her 21 frames so far in the team event.
The Hampton potter set up a clash with Wales’ Sharon Dickson in the second round tomorrow and also recovered from a slow start in the team competition to help England to six successive wins.
She won only one of her three frames in the surprise 8-7 defeat by Wales, took two out of three in wins against Australia 10-5 and Northern Ireland 9-6 but won all three against both (11-4) and Scotland (12-3).
England gained revenge for their opening match defeat by beating Wales 9-6 and followed up with a 10-5 victory over Australia, Smith winning two out of three on both occasions.
Fellow city potter Liz Disney, making her World Championship debut, went out 6-2 in the opening round to Ireland’s Sandra Bryan.
