Revamped bicycle shelter ready to be used
A REVAMPED cycle shelter at a shopping centre is now open for shoppers to use.
The Horsefair Shopping Centre in Wisbech opened the newly-refurbed cycle shelter this week.
The new shelter, which is situated at the side of the centre’s Superdrug Store, will allow more than double the number of bikes to be housed there.
This will take the total number of spaces for bicycles from 16 to 36 and was refurbished by the shopping centre in partnership with Fenland District Coun- cil.
Horsefair Shopping Centre manager Kevin Smith said: “The new shelter will offer shoppers who prefer to visit the centre on bike additional spaces to leave them.
“The shelter was previously full to capacity on a daily basis. We hope that it will encourage others to be greener by using bikes rather than their cars to take shorter journeys.”
Councillor Kit Owen, the council’s portfolio holder responsible for transport and infrastructure, said: “We’re very pleased to have been able to work closely with the Horsefair to put this new shelter in place. By more than doubling the previous capacity it will make life a lot better for the increasing number of cyclists, both shoppers and commuters.
“It will also play its part in furthering two of our other aims - improving the street scene and promoting the use of sustainable transport.”
