An encounter with the ghost of Christmas past
THERE are eight shopping days to go until Christmas so those of you needing to pick up gifts and festive food don’t need to panic. But this wasn’t always the case. Chris took this black and white photograph of Cathedral Square in the days before late night shopping and Sunday trading.
It shows Peterborough city centre in 1980, three years before work started to turn it into a pedestrianised precinct.
Of course that’s just one of many changes since the days of leg warmers and big hair.
If you look at the right hand side of the picture you can see the hoardings behind which Queensgate was built.
Mcdonalds and the Body Shop are now on the site.
Chris thinks it may have been the Greyhound pub before that but he isn’t sure.
There’s also the Hepworths store on the left hand side of the picture, which went on to become Burger King and is now Pizza Express.
Our second photograph takes us inside the Queensgate shopping centre and was probably taken during one of its first festive seasons.
The K Shoe Shop, Olympus Sports, Martins the newsagent, C&A, Etam andtammy Girl are no longer trading there and the fountains and seating area has also disappeared.
But one thing that doesn’t seem to have altered is the number of Christmas shoppers passing through the building. Chris’s 2012 calendar costs £6. It is available from Destination Centre; Peterborough Central Library; Reba in Cathedral Square; Colemans in Cowgate; Shrives; Cancer Research in Westgate; Savethe Children in Midgate; the Salvation Army shop in Broadway; Twiggy’s in Rivergate; Twiggs and Bows in Serpentine Green; The Barn Garden Centre and Peterborough City Hospital shop.
It is advisable to buy early to avoid disappointment.
There is a December page on the calendar so you can put it up straight away.
It will be Chris’s last calendar as he is working on a book for next year.
