£27,000 festive card sales record
SALES at a charity Christmas card shop in a Peterborough church have totalled more than £27,000.
Money raised from the sale of cards at St John The Baptist Church, in Church Street, had already reached record levels with a week to go before it finished, but the final total of £27,281 easily eclipsed last year’s figure of £22,974.
The sale, which ran from the end of October to Friday last week, was run by the Cards for Good Causes organisation, which manages a network of around 300 charity Christmas shops across the UK.
About £24,000 of the total came from card sales with proceeds going to more than 30 charities, minus an administrative charge. The remainder came from Christmas gifts to help continue the work of Cards for Good Causes.
Shop manager Wendy Dyer, who thanked her team of 30 volunteers and the police for their support, said: “I’m delighted, especially as we were told, as it was a time of recession, not to expect to sell as much as normal.”
She put the bumper sales down to the revamp outside the church.
She said: “We have had a lot of new customers because of the work outside that has made the church more accessible.”
