Tick­est on sale for Straw Bear mu­sic

TICK­ETS for the big Whit­tle­sey Straw Bear Fes­ti­val open­ing con­cert are now on sale.

A trio of acts – Quick­sil­ver, Pete Coe and Tau­tas Roks – are on the bill for the show tak­ing place at the Ivy Leaf Club, in Gra­cious Street, Whit­tle­sey on Fri­day, Jan­uary 13.

The evening runs from 8.30pm to 11.30pm and tick­ets cost­ing £9 are avail­able by call­ing 01733 204055.

This year’s Straw Bear Fes­ti­val runs from Jan­uary 13 to 15 and will fea­ture a num­ber of pro­ces­sions, con­certs and dances.

Af­ter be­ing re­vived in 1980, the fes­ti­val now sees more than 250 dancers, mu­si­cians and per­form­ers from across the UK at­tend and per­form Molly, Clog, Mor­ris and Sword dances.

Satur­day is the only day on which the wan­der­ing straw bear makes an ap­pear­ance be­fore the “burn­ing” at Sir Harry Smith Com­mu­nity lege on the Sun­day.

Th­e­sat­ur­daypro­ces­sion leaves the Manor Leisure Cen­tre, in Sta­tion Road, at 10.30am and winds its way to the li­brary via the Mar­ket Place.

The bear then am­bles around Mar­ket Street, Mar­ket Place and Sta­tion Road un­til noon. A sec­ond pro­ces­sion leaves the Ivy Leaf Club at 1.30pm.

When the New Road Pri­mary School Molly Dancers join the pa­rade this year it will be the 20th year the school has had chil­dren fol­low­ing the bear.

Some of the other big events in­clude sto­ry­telling at the Whit­tle­sey Methodist/united Re­formed Church, in Queen Street, at 12.30pm, 1.30pm and 2.30pm on the Satur­day; a barn dance at the Sir Harry Smith Com­mu­nity Col­lege and a Ca­jun dance at the Childers Club both on the Satur­day night.
