This year’s Straw Bear Festival runs from January 13 to 15 and will feature a number of processions, concerts and dances.
After being revived in 1980, the festival now sees more than 250 dancers, musicians and performers from across the UK attend and perform Molly, Clog, Morris and Sword dances.
Saturday is the only day on which the wandering straw bear makes an appearance before the “burning” at Sir Harry Smith Community lege on the Sunday.
Thesaturdayprocession leaves the Manor Leisure Centre, in Station Road, at 10.30am and winds its way to the library via the Market Place.
The bear then ambles around Market Street, Market Place and Station Road until noon. A second procession leaves the Ivy Leaf Club at 1.30pm.
When the New Road Primary School Molly Dancers join the parade this year it will be the 20th year the school has had children following the bear.
Some of the other big events include storytelling at the Whittlesey Methodist/united Reformed Church, in Queen Street, at 12.30pm, 1.30pm and 2.30pm on the Saturday; a barn dance at the Sir Harry Smith Community College and a Cajun dance at the Childers Club both on the Saturday night.
