12 good causes for Christmas giving
TWELVE worthy causes benefited from John Lewis’s annual Community Grant Scheme, run through the pages of the Evening Telegraph. Deputy features editor JOHN BAKER reveals the winners.
CHURCHES, charities, and community groups were among the lucky recipients of the annual grant, from a pot of £3,000.
Evening Telegraph readers sent in their bids for the funds throughout October and November, and we then passed on their information to staff at the Queensgate department store to make the final decision.
Dozens of good causes had made their pitch and it proved impossible to cut it down to just 10 winners.
So instead judges awarded eight recipients with £300, while another four will receive £150 each.
The cash will be spent in various ways, such as buying new kitchen facilities, paying for baby equipment, educational books and toys, and installing disabled facilities for swimmers.
The scheme is now in its fourth year and community liaison coordinator at John Lewis Emma Valerio said: “We were overwhelmed by the response again this year. There are so many deserving causes and we would love to be able to support them all.
“Sadly we have to decide which groups will receive the £300 grant, I’m so pleased I have colleagues to help me choose.
“We are really thrilled to be able to support so many local charities as they do such positive work in the Peterborough area.”
