Sneak preview inside new £20m academy
A SPECTACULAR £20 million school which will bring lessons into the 21st century is on schedule to open in September.
The new Ormiston Bushfield Academy building has been under construction for a year, and The Evening Telegraph was allowed a sneak peek at how the project was coming along.
Much of the construction work has been completed on the shell of the 10,000 square metre building which is at the back of the current school at the Orton Centre in Peterborough.
The new building will house classrooms for the 950 children and 170 teaching staff who are due to move over at the start of the school year.
The school’s new stage and TV studio are also clearly recognisable, with the studio gallery almost ready except for needing the hi-tech equipment to be installed.
Michael Bullard, the school’s finance director, said pupils could not wait to see the finished school.
He said: “It is very exciting for everybody to be able to see the progress being made every week and every month.
“Pupils have had the chance to help design parts of the building and teachers and governors have also had the chance to look round.
“What is also important is the ability for the community to use the facilities.
“There will be a public library at the school and the community will be encouraged to use the school stage, radio station and TV studios outside of school hours.”
Each department has been colour-coded, with walls in corridors and classrooms given their own personal touch - including inspirational quotes from famous faces.
And it is not just the pupils who will benefit from the upgraded building. The staff room will include an outdoor terrace, while the equipment being installed will be some of the best in the city.
The project is being completed by Kier and project manager Richard German said: “Everything is going to plan so far and we are confident it will be ready in July.”
