Following investment of more than £735,000 by franchisee Martin Cuthbert and Mcdonald’s Restaurants Ltd, the fully-refurbished store now provides a “fabulous” new seating scheme and decor – an extra one third in seating making this the biggest Mcdonald’s restaurant in the region – and Wifi facilities which should enhance its appeal for business meetings.

Changes to the fast food outlet also include the addition of outdoor furniture and a “digital play” area for children where they will be able to play interactive games.

In addition, the Boongate outlet has an enhanced drive-through facility, a side-by-side ordering system incorporating camera recognition to accommodate greater customer traffic.

The refurbishment project is part of Martin’s ongoing investment in his Mcdonald’s franchises which, in Peterborough, has seen business grow nine per cent in Queensgate and 7.5 per cent in Boongate.

But it is not only buildings that are being invested in, as the business is fully committed to upskilling its staff via a Government-recognised apprenticeship scheme.

Martin said: “We are proud of the fact that in our two Peterborough stores we have taken on 15 apprentices so far in 2011 and are on target to get 20 by year end.

“Our apprentices are on full pay and receive in-house training. The training actually comprises three stages, studying GCSE English and Maths online, the in-house training and key skills training. It all adds up to Level II multi skill hospitality qualification. Upskilling our staff leads to the management of the future.”

Martin started out in franchising more than 16 years ago during which time he has bought and developed four other Mcdonald’s franchises – all drive-throughs and based in Melton Mowbray, Grantham, Sleaford and Boston.
