Quizzers provide a Mammoth test for the Eggheads
BRAINBOX quizzers from Oundle took on the might of the Eggheads to boost a charity’s coffers.
Six friends from Oundle, David and Ann Chapple, Jeff and Wendy Knowles, Melvyn Chapman and their team captain Anna Webb organise a giant quiz every year in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.
Thousands of people attempt the Macmillan Mammoth Quiz brainteaser every year and in the last four years the group has raised a staggering £35,000.
As the group plan to try to break the world record for having the most participants in a simultaneous quiz next year, Anna Webb wanted to find a way to raise the profile of their quiz.
So she applied for them to go on the television quiz show Eggheads and at the same time, donate any winnings from their appearance on the show to Macmillan Cancer Support.
Anna, of Cotterstock Road, Oundle, said: “It was really lovely filming. They were ever so nice to us and came to speak to us before and afterwards. And the presenter, Dermot Murnaghan, was lovely.
“We had to make it through an au- dition process in Birmingham before the real filming event in Glasgow.
“We don’t know yet when it will go out but it will be some time next year which is a big year for us.”
The team went by the name of the Mammoth Quizzers, named after the Macmillan Mammoth Quiz they write every year.
Participants enter by registering an event and a pack is sent out to organisers who arrange a quiz.
Proceeds from each event are sometimes split between Macmillan and a good cause chosen by the organiser but it sees several thousand pounds raised each year.
To coincide with the Olympic year, Anna is hoping next year’s Macmillan Mammoth Quiz will smash the world record for most participants in a simultaneous quiz on Friday, February 24.
Anna said: “It is a big year for everyone so we are also going for gold.
“We’ve registered with the Guinness World Records and are attempting to break both simultaneous number of quiz events and the number of participants.
“We’re already close with quiz events and I am confident we will break the record for number of participants which currently stands at 1,234.”
Anyone can register to hold a quiz as part of the Macmillan Mammoth Quiz and there are already teams as far away as Sri Lanka competing in February as well as plenty of local events.
