Hereward Cup set for stormy ties
THE first round draw for the Peterborough Sunday Morning League’s Hereward Cup competition has thrown up a potentially stormy tie.
Holders Deeping Athletic will play away to TSL Rangers in the new year. The pair were also drawn together in the PFA Sunday Morning Cup first round earlier this season when the match was abandoned by referee Reg Parker following an altercation with a TSL official.
That incident is still under investigation by the PFA, although it’s likely Deeping will be awarded the tie. The Premier Division side will start the Hereward Cup tie as favourites against First Division TSL.
Deeping beat Coco’s in the final last season and the city-based side should see off Division One whipping boys Woodston Rovers in their first round match.
Pick of the first round matches are a tie between Premier Division heavyweights Parkway and Netherton and the clash between top-flight Coates and First Division title favourites Peterborough Town.
Town, who were formed last season as Cresset FC, have never lost a Sunday Morning fixture and they knocked Netherton out of the PFA Sunday Morning Cup earlier this month.
Town, as Cresset, also won the Peterborough Sunday Morning League’s McCain Cup last season, but they can’t defend it as they play their league football in too high a division.
The draw for the first round of that competition has also been made and again it’s produced another potentially awkward fixture.
Division Three rivals Hampton Reserves and Farcet United Reserves have been drawn together. Their recent league meeting included a fist-fight and two red cards.
