THE nationwide Christmas shopping spree has renewed fears of an alarming increase in personal debt as people get carried away with bargain hunting.
Debt advice organisations are bracing themselves for a huge upsurge in consumers admitting to money problems after drasti- cally overspending on their festive budget.
Some £2.5 billion passed through tills across the UK yesterday on top of an estimated £1.8 billion on Boxing Day.
Analysts believe the combined total will be the highest-ever spend on record for December 26 and 2 .
