THE countdown to one of the Deepings’ top events has begun.

The annual Raft Race, organised by the Rotary Club of the Deepings, returns on Sunday, August 5 with an Olympic-themed twist to the day.

All the profits from the big day will be funnelled into sports clubs this year and Raft Race Committee Chairman Kevin Barber is appealing to all clubs to get involved in the event.

He said: “One of the aims of our Rotary Club is to invest time and money in improving the lives of local people.

“So in this Olympic year we decided to donate all the profits from the Raft Race to local sports clubs.

“In order to benefit from the proceeds we are asking all sports clubs to get involved in the race, either by entering a raft or with volunteers assisting us for a few hours on race day itself.”

As well as the Olympic-themed rafts racing down the River Welland there will be a fun fair and lots of stalls in Market Deeping town centre for an afternoon of family fun.

This year’s special feature is a flypast by a Dakota from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight to delight the crowd.
