BUSINESSES in Peterborough are joining forces in an innovative and unique partnership to help support charities and communities in line with the city’s greatest needs.

Side by Side is the city’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) forum and is based on the premise that the city is “better together”. It aims to make it easier for all private sector businesses in Peterborough to play a part in improving the quality of life for all communities and to help the city achieve its ambitions.

One of the first of its kind in the country, the forum wants to bring together employers and employees across the area that engage in CSR work – to share experiences, align activities and make introductions between businesses and community groups and charities.

Side by Side is not inventing new projects for businesses to tackle or wanting to get in the way of the vast amount of superb community work undertaken by firms in Peterborough. The forum wants to support that activity and help make it more effective and efficient by improving communication and creating a one-stop-shop website that provides ideas and contacts for CSR activities, an opportunity to share resource and success stories and participate in forum events.

Side by Side launches on May 10 at 2pm at the Learning Centre at Perkins Engines, and is open to all businesses in the city.

Rod Allerton, head of charity and community relations for Thomas Cook, said: “This is a brand new concept – we’re not aware of this type of forum anywhere else in the country. It shows how committed the private sector is to Peterborough and how much it wants to help the city achieve its ambitions as well as tackle its greatest challenges.”

A small core of businesses has joined together as part of the Greater Peterborough Partnership to fund the launch of Side by Side, Peterborough’s corporate social responsibility forum, and its website www.sidebysidecsr.co.uk – which goes live on May 10.

Yvonne Puplett, CSR manager at Perkins, said: “As one of the largest employers in the city, we take our responsibility to actively contribute to the community very seriously. We know the con- tributions, both financially and through voluntary work, made by Perkins and other local businesses are already making a difference in Peterborough.

“But we want to be assured that our support is directed in the right place to address the challenges the city faces and really have a lasting impact for the good of the community.”

Leader of the Peterborough City Council Marco Cereste said: “Top marks to the businesses in the city for getting involved and helping us realise Peterborough’s ambitions. By working together we can do so much more for the good of the city. This brilliant new idea draws on many of Peterborough’s strengths – innovation, partnership working and community spirit. I am sure it will be a great success.”
