Pop­u­lar res­tau­rant to cease trad­ing

A POP­U­LAR Chi­nese res­tau­rant in the Mill­field area of Peter­bor­ough is to close af­ter 20 years in busi­ness due to the pres­sures of the cur­rent eco­nomic cli­mate.

The fam­ily-run Em­peror res­tau­rant in Lin­coln Road will hold its final day of trad­ing on Satur­day, June 2.

The res­tau­rant’s owner Tony Che­ung said that the decision had been a tough call to make.

He said: “It’s down to a num­ber of rea­sons re­ally. The cur­rent cli­mate is very tough for all busi­nesses.

“At the same time our chef is set to re­tire and we just thought the time was right to stop.

“It is sad be­cause we’ve been here for 20 years and have many mem­o­ries and made sev­eral friends for life.

“I have been in the res­tau­rant trade for 40 years now, I’m nearly 60 years of age and things are catch­ing up with me.

“If I was a younger man, maybe 40 or 50, then maybe I could carry on but now it feels dif­fer­ent.

“I don’t know what I’ll do next but I think I will just take it easy for a lit­tle while.”

Mr Che­ung said that he would be sell­ing the venue and that a num­ber of par­ties had expressed in­ter­est in the premises.

He added: “It would be nice if the build­ing could stay as a res­tau­rant and con­tinue the tra­di­tion.

“I have heard from a num­ber of cus­tomers in the past few days, word of our clo­sure has cer­tainly trav­elled fast.

“I would like to thank them for their kind words and hope to wel­come them for a final time over the next few weeks.”

A num­ber of cus­tomers have con­tacted the Evening Tele­graph to ex­press their sad­ness at the news.

Cus­tomer He­len Porter, of El­ton Road, Sib­son, said: “For me it’s the best Chi­nese res­tau­rant in Peter­bor­ough.

“It’s a fam­ily-run busi­ness and you’re al­ways made to feel wel­come when­ever you eat there.

“The food is very tra­di­tional Chi­nese cui­sine and con­sis­tently cooked to a good stan­dard.”

Ms Porter, who works in the mar­ket­ing in­dus­try, added: “If the own­ers had told me they were clos­ing a month ago I would have will­ingly started a free ad­ver­tis­ing cam­paign for them.”
