Football festival scores success
A FOOTBALL tournament for 1,500 budding soccer stars will take place in the township thanks to a shopping centre.
The football festival will be held over four days on consecutive weekends June 9, 10, 16 and 17 - at the Hampton Community Sports Association’s playing fields, in Beaumont Way.
The tournament is being named the Serpentine Green Football Festival, after the shopping centre agreed to sponsor the event.
The sponsorship deal includes a £1,600 donation to make sure the festival is a success.
Serpentine Green has helped Hampton Football Club out on many occasions since the club launched in 2003 regularly sponsoring team kits.
The football festival will cater for boys’ teams from under sevens to under 18s and will also include a Ladies’ Day for under 10s girls’ teams and any women’s teams.
Hampton Football Club is expecting around 1,500 children and young people from all over Cambridgeshire to attend the tournament and have even had enquires from teams as far away as Tyne and Wear and Yorkshire.
Dennis Baldry, Serpentine Green centre manager, said he was delighted to be able to sponsor the tournament.
He said: “Hampton Football Club do a brilliant job training children and young people in our community.
“This tournament will really put Hampton on the football map and be a great finish to the season for all our local players.”
Steve Purnell, Hampton Football Club chairman, said he was sure the tournament would help the club meet its goals.
He said: “We are delighted to be working so closely with Serpentine Green on this massive occasion for Hampton Football Club.
“The community is coming together to celebrate the football festival and as a partnership we know it will be a great success.”
