Trophy on a plate for Northern Star
A FINE season for Northern Star Ladies now has a silver lining.
The city club, who reached the third round proper of the Women’s FA Cup and achieved their best East Midlands Premier Division for six years, lifted the East Midlands Plate at the weekend.
A 6-1 rampage against Oadby & Wigston left the city aces celebrating, but the match only went ahead after Star officials helped clear standing water from the pitch at Ilkeston Town FC.
Star were virtually home and hosed by the break after Julie Ikeda’s opener, a classy Chanade Henderson second and a brace from Geo Sturgess.
Midfield ace Rachel Adkin took over scoring duties in the second half as a couple of clinical finishes from the edge of the box brought up Star’s half-dozen before their opponents claimed a late consolation after Star midfield Shay Stanford had been sent off.
Star boss Chris Lyon said: “We lost in the final two years ago so we were determined to go home as winners this time. We did that and the attitude of the players was spot-on.
“We have the basis of a very good team here but we know we need to continue to improve if we are to reach our target of playing in the Women’s Combination League.”
NORTHERN Star goal machine Julie Ikeda has been voted the best player in the East Midlands Premier Division by her opponents.
Ikeda won the league players’ player of the season accolade which is based on the number of player-of-the-match awards handed out by opposing teams.
Ikeda got the nod 10 times in Star’s 16 matches this season - the most of any player in the league.
Ikeda has scored 34 times in all competitions and boss Chris Lyon said: “It’s a huge achievement for Julie. She didn’t just win this award for her goals - it was also down to her constant haranguing of defenders as well.”
