OVER 200 sports mad youngsters descended on Stanground Academy for a special Olympics-themed event.

Primary school pupils from Oakdale, Saint Augustine’s, Stanground St John, Southfield and Farcet primary schools took part in the event, to mark the 100 day countdown to this summer’s London Olympic Games.

The academy organised a range of Olympic sports for the youngsters to try out.

These included archery, climbing, curling and fencing.

A total of 209 youngsters took part in the sports and also learned about the history and true meaning of the Olympic Games.

James Aldous, PE manager at Stanground Academy, said: “The children had such a great time that they wanted to do it again when there are 50 days to go to the Games.

“Unfortunately we won’t be able to do that but I really hope that the event inspired them to take an interest in sport.

“The activities we organised for them were all sports that will be part of the Olympics.

“Many of the children have never had the chance to do wall climbing or fencing, so they found it really exciting.”

GOLD STAR: Yassar Mohammed, manager at Fletton Fish and Chips, celebrates the store being given a prestigious award for the quality of its frying oil.
