Swimmers do their bit to aid cancer charity at Swimathon
FORTY swimmers made a splash to help raise funds for a worthy cause.
Stanground Sports Centre hosted the annual Swimathon event on April 28 and 29 to raise funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care.
The event, which was held at swimming pools all over the UK last weekend, attracted participants of all ages.
Emma Walker, manager at Stanground Sports Centre, said: “We had 40 people taking part, from fouryear-old children to pensioners.
“The swimming pool was absolutely packed and there were lots of people cheering the swimmers on.
“People swam a variety of distances between one mile and 5,000 kilometres.
“It was a fantastic occasion and everyone enjoyed themselves. We don’t how much was raised yet as the proceeds are still being counted.”
Funds raised through the Swimathon Distance Challenges for Marie Curie Cancer Care will provide free nursing care and support for people with terminal cancer and other illnesses.
The charity expects to care for over 31,000 terminally ill patients in the community and in its hospices this year.
