Mayday & duck race:

The Peterborough Evening Telegraph - - FRONT PAGE -

TRADITIONAL bank holiday rain meant there was perfect weather for ducks at a bizarre charity race.

The Whittlesey Duck race was held yesterday, with hundreds of plastic ducks poured into Whittlesey Bower.

They were then powered up the river by Whittlesey Volunteer Fire Brigade.

The race was organised to raise funds for the town’s Diamond Jubilee party, being held next month.

To promote the race Jacquie Baldrey, a member of the town council’s Diamond Jubilee committee, has been dressing up as a duck around the town.

She said: “The race has been raising money for the jubilee party, and we think we have raised nearly £700.

“The preparations for the jubilee party are going well, and we are just getting ready to put red, white and blue flowers in.

“I have been getting a good reaction this week for dressing up.

“A few people said I was quackers to do it, but to be honest it was just water off a ducks back.”

and they’re off: The race gets under way.
