Attacked couple are afraid to go home
AN ELDERLY couple viciously attacked by baseball batwielding burglars have been left so traumatised by their experience that they are too scared to return home.
Cruel burglars knocked a 68-yearold woman unconscious and beat up her husband, also 68, as they forced their way into the couple’s home in Bifield, Orton Goldhay, on Saturday, April 21.
The couple suffered serious facial injuries but were allowed to leave hospital the next day.
But so shaken were they by the events that they have not returned to their bungalow, which they rent from Cross Keys Homes, since their release.
They are currently in temporary accommodation while Cross Keys Homes, the city’s largest housing association, finds them a more permanent alternative.
A spokeswoman from Cross Keys Homes added that they have asked police to step up patrols in the area to deter would-be criminals.
She said: “We are working closely with the couple to help them find al- ternative appropriate housing.
“We are also working with the police to ensure that they carry out regular patrols of the area and reassure the community.”
Police are still investigating the crime, but have not found any new leads since the attack last month.
The attack occurred when the man of the house answered a knock at the door, only to be confronted by three masked men, one of whom was armed with a baseball bat.
The couple’s 18-month-old grandchild was sleeping just metres away in a bedroom while the trio carried out their attack.
The motive appeared to be burglary, however despite searching the property, nothing was taken.
A police spokesman said: “The victims have not been back to the property and are in the process of getting new accommodation. They are still shaken up by what happened and did not want to return to the property.
“If anyone has further information we would be grateful if they could get in touch.”
Anyone with information about the burglary and attack should contact Cambridgeshire police on 101. Alternatively, they can give information anonymously by getting in contact with Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
