WORKS to improve cycle routes for school children in Peterborough have now been completed. The £100,000 project funded jointly by national charity Sustrans and Peterborough City Council has seen works to remove barriers, install additional signage and create three priority crossings for cyclists in the Stagsden, Pennington and Mandeville areas in the Ortons. In both Pennington and Mandeville damaged and inappropriate guardrailing was removed and replaced with bollards, the carriageway was resur- faced and raised to meet the height of the footway and cycleway and priority was given to pedestrians and cyclists rather than motor vehicles. The improvement works started in October 2011 and were completed in March 2012. In total there have been 15 changes or improvements across the Ortons, with the most substantial improvements focusing on Stagsden, Pennington and Mandeville. Matthew Barber, Peterborough City Council’s Sustainable Travel Officer, said: “It is great to see these improvements, which will no doubt make a big difference to cyclists in the Ortons. “Before these works were completed, some of the crossing points were in extremely poor condition and difficult for cyclists to negotiate. Hopefully these works will make it easier for cyclists to use our cycle routes and also improve the coherence of the cycle network in the area. “We are especially pleased to see the priority crossings for cyclists installed at Pennington and Mandeville, which highlights our commitment to improving conditions for cyclists
