Centrica warns of rising energy costs

The Peterborough Evening Telegraph - - Uk&world Update -

HOUSEHOLDS were facing the prospect of more price hikes after British Gas owner Centrica warned its costs continued to mount. The UK’S biggest energy supplier dropped its standard electricity tariff by 5 per cent in January after big rises in both gas and electricity bills over the summer. But it warned that the trend for retail energy costs “remains upwards”, with wholesale gas prices 15 per cent higher for next winter and other costs set to add £50 to the cost of supplying the average household this year. A round of price reductions by the UK’S major suppliers earlier this year were not enough to offset price hikes over previous months, and utility bills have been a driver of the rising cost of living that has squeezed households. * SIR TOM JONES has said he’d rather die on stage than retire. The Voice judge, 71 - who has been singing for more than half a century - told The Star he has no plans to hang up his microphone. “I hope my life comes to a natural full-stop so maybe it’d be easiest if I fell down dead on stage,” he confessed. “I hate the thought of not being able to sing. I’ve no idea “Who the hell wrote this script?” - The Prince of Wales, coming across a reference to “a few flurries over Balmoral” while reading the weather forecast for Scotland on TV. “If I go back to music in any arena, I will have to be careful how things are set by those around me and careful that I am really being loved and respected and taken care of and that I’m not just there to pay anyone’s mortgage at any cost. I am not prepared to be prostituted because I have a gift” - Singer Sinead O’connor, who “suffered a meltdown” during a tour. “She is only 30. She doesn’t have to dress like the Queen yet” - Nancy Dell’olio criticises the Duchess of Cambridge’s dress sense. “I really don’t have that big drive to explore the limits of my craft. It’s just a job to me. My favourite thing to do is to not work” - Actor Matt Leblanc. “I am not here to be beautiful. I am not here to be sexy. That’s for another movie. But for this movie it was sweat. More sweat, then more dirt. More blood” - Actress Noomi Rapace on her role in a gritty new film. “Teeth are all right, thanks. I didn’t want to get the porcelain veneer” - Actor Rafe Spall’s response when asked if he had undergone “Hollywood shine work” on his teeth.
