ONE of Peterborough’s oldest stores has taken on a new look as it celebrates serving city customers for 100 years.
The foodstore in Mayor’s Walk has been given a refit as part of a £1.3 million programme for selected stores owned by Anglia Co-operative.
The work has taken about two weeks and was completed in time for the store to reveal its new face to shoppers on May 2.
Staff dressed in Mad Hatter’s Tea Party costumes to reflect the celebrations and invited representatives of the Amazon Children’s Ward at Peterborough City Hospital to join in the fun.
To mark their milestone the store team is raising money for the chil- dren’s ward, pledging to provide tea, coffee and biscuits for parents visiting youngsters in the ward.
Manager Gary Cowling said: “It’s amazing to think that this store has been serving the community for over 100 years.
“We feel proud to be working in a building with such history and we’re really excited about our new look, which makes us a showpiece for Anglia Co-operative’s convenience stores.
“We’ve built up a close relationship with the children’s ward in re- cent years and, as our latest effort for them, we’re setting out to provide a little comfort for parents who have to spend lengthy periods visiting the ward.”
Peterborough City Hospital play services co-ordinator Zoe Wilkinson said: “The store’s continuous support for the children’s ward is just brilliant and is enabling us to give the children an even better quality of care.
“Recent support has enabled us to buy soft play equipment and baby changing facilities and the store’s latest pledge to provide tea, coffee and biscuits for parents when they are visiting their children will help make it more like a home-from-home experience.”
