Warning to businesses about relief

The Peterborough Evening Telegraph - - Uk&world Update -

SMALL businesses in the area are being warned to beware of rating agents offering to help them claim Small Business Rate Relief.

Huntingdonshire District Council has issued the warning saying it is aware that rating agents are contacting small businesses encouraging them to sign up to use their services.

For a fee, usually a percentage of any reduction obtained, the agents are offering to apply for Small Business Rate Relief or appeal against the Rateable Value of properties, on behalf of ratepayers.

But the council has said that in most cases it is not necessary to employ a rating agent to claim Small Business Rate Relief because the application form is simple to complete and can be obtained easily by either downloading it from the district council’s website or by calling its helpline.

Ian Sims, local taxation manager for the council, said: “During these difficult times, especially for the small business community, it simply does not make sense to pay for a service that is not required.

“We wrote to all 4,800 ratepayers with their annual bill at the end of March and continue to promote this scheme at every opportunity, but if businesses are approached and asked for a fee simply to complete a form for relief I encourage them to call our helpline line on 01480 388030.”
