HARDWORKING, community conscious Whittlesey citizens were recognised at an annual awards ceremony.
The recipients of this year’s Whittlesey Citizen Of The Year awards were invited to a special evening at the Whittlesey Town Hall.
Citizen of the Year award went to Jean Devenish, a woman who gives up hours and hours of her free time to help out local charities.
Mrs Devenish also runs the Whittlesey Patchwork and Quilting Group, providing a welcoming place for people to meet and share their love of stitching.
The Whittlesey Young Citizen Of The Year award was given to Molly Martin, a Year 6 pupil at Park Lane Primary school. Molly was nominated for the award by school staff for tirelessly fundraising for a wide range of worthy causes.
In a special nomination, Abbie Wiles was given an Outstanding Con- tribution To The Community award.
Abbie, a Year 10 pupil at Sir Harry Smith Community College, was nominated by college principal Jonathan Digby.
Abbie volunteers at the Whittlesey St John Ambulance group and is always involved in activities and campaigns at Sir Harry Smith.
The Mayor of Whittlesey councillor Kay Mayor was on hand to dish out the awards.
She said the standard of entries had been very high, adding: “Each of them should be very proud. I know the judges had a difficult task this year.”
At the same meeting, Cllr Mayor presented a cheque for £1,700 to the Whittlesey St John Ambulance group.
The money was raised at the Mayor’s annual civic ball.
It was also confirmed that Cllr Mayor would be spending a second term in office as the town’s mayor while her deputy will remain as Cllr Martin Curtis.
