Greece will have new elec­tion

GREECE will face an­other gen­eral elec­tion, so­cial­ist leader Evan­ge­los Venize­los said af­ter talks to agree a new gov­ern­ment pro­duced no deal. He said: “Un­for­tu­nately, the coun­try is head­ing again to­ward elec­tions.” Mr Venize­los had met other party lead­ers con­vened by the coun­try’s pres­i­dent in a last-ditch at­tempt to bro­ker a deal. The Athens Stock Ex­change plunged on the news, div­ing 4.86 per cent min­utes af­ter the an­nounce­ment be­fore re­cov­er­ing slightly. The May 6 elec­tion left no party with enough votes for a ma­jor­ity in par­lia­ment and re­peated ef­forts over nine days to cob­ble to­gether a coali­tion gov­ern­ment proved fruit­less.
