PUPILS from Oundle School immersed themselves in French culture to help with their language studies.

The youngsters stayed with host families in the port city of La Rochelle.

Sammy Shair (14) said: “My family lived in a lovely old house, which is 100 years old, in the centre of La Rochelle. They had prepared a delicious meal of traditional French food for our lunch, including fresh oysters farmed locally.

“The variety of food was something we really enjoyed throughout our stay and we welcomed the opportunity to try all the local produce on offer.”

The purpose of the trip was to give pupils a chance to practise their French with native speakers, and to give them a taste of French life and the local area.

Each morning they spent their time at school with the afternoons set aside for trips around the city.

French teacher, Leti Brighton said: “Despite a rather rainy week, this year’s group had a great time in La Rochelle, putting into practice what they had learned at school and improving their language skills by being immersed in a French environment through family home-stay, daily lessons in small groups, and varied cultural visits and activities around the area.”
