Fabulous Footitts in fine form for England
THE fabulous Footitt brothers delivered impressive international performances for the English canoeing team.
Matthew (16) and Louis (11) competed for their country in the Pan Celtic Cup, a slalom event held between England, Scotland and Wales, at the National Watersports Centre in Nottingham.
Matthew, in only his second full year of canoe slalom, is now a regular in the England training squad and was part of the GB selection trials earlier in the year.
Competing at Under 18 level he finished 11th overall in the single canoe and 12th in the two-man canoe style. This followed good results on the same course the previous day where he had a fourth and fifth place finish in a National Division One event.
Louis, in his second selection for the Pan Celtic Cup, competed at Under 12 level in a kayak on the same courses as his older brother and found the courses much more of a challenge.
Although not featuring highly in the results table, Louis is shaping up well to follow his brother through the Canoe England system.
For Louis it’s all about technical development, his strength and ability to cope with demanding and challenging courses will improve as he grows.
Matthew will be away training over half-term at the Canoe England residential training camp for four days on the artificial course at Nottingham.
They are both looking forward to entry into the Teen Cup, a European event being held in Augsburg, Germany in August followed by a week’s training on the World Championship course in Troja, Prague.
Matthew, who is sponsored by JD Carter Electrical, said: ”I’m really pleased with my progress in these events and would really struggle without the support of Justin Carter and Greg Hitchen, the Canoe England technical coach.”
The brothers, who attend Arthur Mellows Village College, Glinton train up to four times a week on the River Nene and at Nottingham closely monitored by coaching staff.
They both belong to Proteus Canoe Club based at Orton Mere.
Other Proteus members to paddle for England at Nottingham were Sally Atkinson, Kate Kent, Kosi Atkinson and Peter Atkinson.
PROTEUS are holding a National ranking event next weekend, May 26/27, at Orton Mere.
