Sad­ness at death of ex-may­oress

POP­U­LAR for­mer Peter­bor­ough May­oress Doris Marchant died yes­ter­day.

Mrs Marchant (81) was found in her home in Chaucer Road. She was last seen at 8pm on Mon­day evening, when a neigh­bour saw her clos­ing her win­dow.

She was may­oress to for­mer mayor Cllr Keith Sharp from 2010 to 2011. Mrs Marchant em­braced the role with vigour and helped raise a stag­ger­ing £24,147 for char­i­ties.

Cllr Sharp said: “The neigh­bours phoned me up to say Doris had passed away and that she had been found on the floor in her house.

“I knew Doris for around 30 years, she was al­ways look­ing out for oth­ers – she would do shop­ping for vul­ner­a­ble peo­ple half her age.

“She had a real sense of com­mu­nity and that is why I chose her to be my con­sort.”

Mrs Marchant, who turned 81 on May 9, ded­i­cated her­self to oth­ers dur­ing her life and was nom­i­nated for the Pride in Peter­bor­ough Best Neigh­bour Award.
