Sadness at death of ex-mayoress
POPULAR former Peterborough Mayoress Doris Marchant died yesterday.
Mrs Marchant (81) was found in her home in Chaucer Road. She was last seen at 8pm on Monday evening, when a neighbour saw her closing her window.
She was mayoress to former mayor Cllr Keith Sharp from 2010 to 2011. Mrs Marchant embraced the role with vigour and helped raise a staggering £24,147 for charities.
Cllr Sharp said: “The neighbours phoned me up to say Doris had passed away and that she had been found on the floor in her house.
“I knew Doris for around 30 years, she was always looking out for others – she would do shopping for vulnerable people half her age.
“She had a real sense of community and that is why I chose her to be my consort.”
Mrs Marchant, who turned 81 on May 9, dedicated herself to others during her life and was nominated for the Pride in Peterborough Best Neighbour Award.
The ET will be running a full tribute to Mrs Marchant in Thursday’s paper.
