New team to cost council £140,000
NEW staff costing about £140,000 a year are to be appointed to oversee Peterborough City Council’s external contracts.
The team will manage the contracts with private and not-forprofit organisations - like Enterprise Peterborough, Serco and Vivacity - which have taken over council services.
The move was criticised by opposition groups who said it was creating a buffer between the cabinet and the officers.
Liberal Democrat councillor Darren Fower said: “I think it is a massive kick in the teeth to the hundreds of people who lost their jobs.
“What we have here is a buffer zone. The cabinet are very happy to take the compliments but don’t like it when things are going wrong.
“And I think we’ve got to the situation where we have lots of managers but nobody to manage.”
The four roles are client property manager, a commercial services assistant, an IT partnership officer and strategic partnership manager.
The strategic partnership manager is the highest paid with a salary between £47,124 and £51,906; the client property manager between £35,430 and £38,961; while the commercial assistant and IT officer will be on £22,221 to £25,472.
Each role will be looking after the contracts with Enterprise, Vivacity and Serco, which between them run services ranging from bin collection to museums.
The council defended the move saying the contract with Enterprise Peterborough saves £3 million a year, the one with Vivacity saves £1 million a year and the Serco contract £2 million a year.
Cllr Matthew Lee, deputy council leader, said: “The jobs have been created as a result of the strategic partnerships we have entered into with Enterprise Peterborough, Vivacity and Serco, each of which has generated significant savings for the council and ultimately taxpayers.
“It is important that we drive these partnerships to add to the success they have achieved so far both in terms of the quality of service they offer and the savings they have generated.
“This new team will be responsible for ensuring that through our partners we are offering the people of Peterborough the best services at the best price.”
