DETECTIVES launched a murder investigation after a woman was found dead in a house in Peterborough.
Police cordoned off the house, in Kings Road, Fletton, at about 10am yesterday and arrested a 59-year-old man following the grim discovery.
Scenes of Crime Officers (Soco) combed the house and a small patch of land next to the street at the back of Maud Swift Court.
The identity of the dead woman has not been released but neighbours were shocked at the news and described the couple who live at the house, thought to be in their late 50s or early 60s, as quiet and unassuming.
James Serplus, who lives in the street with his partner and two daughters, said: “They would always send Christmas cards and birthday cards to my girls.
“Everyone on this street knows each other but they kept themselves to themselves.”
And Michael Kerr, who lives opposite the house, said: “They weren’t hermits but they were intensely private. It is shocking that something like this should happen here.”
The officers were called to the quiet street, which is off Fletton High Street, shortly after 10am. About six police cars and an ambulance were spotted in the street and officers were seen coming in and out of the house.
The couple who live at the home were known in the area but were not thought to have any family locally.
Mr Serplus said he only saw the pair when they walked to church every Sunday.
But they were also regulars in the Woolpack pub in North Street, Stanground, where they were known to visit most Sunday afternoons.
Owner Linda Marks said: “They’ve been coming here for as long as I’ve been here. They would chat to everyone.
“She was really lovely. And they always walked everywhere hand in hand.”
Another Kings Road resident, Shane Slater, said the woman would often bring them pears from her garden.
His gran Irene Steels, who also lives in the street, said: “They were very private. We never saw anyone going in the house.
“They have been here over 20 years. I don’t really see him at all but she was a
